Moel Cae'r-defaid

There's something about climbing a Welsh hill that makes you feel like you've earned your tea and cake. Moel Cae'r-defaid sits in the Cader Idris range near Dolgellau, and it's the sort of peak that doesn't get the crowds of its flashier neighbours - which frankly is part of the appeal.

The walk itself is a proper hill walk without being brutal. You'll gain decent height and get proper views across Gwynedd, but it's not going to leave you crawling back to base camp. Allow two to three hours there and back depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The route takes you through moorland and rocky terrain, so decent boots are non-negotiable even when it looks dry.

Walkers will absolutely get this. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage fine, though younger ones might find the rocky sections a bit much. History enthusiasts should know the area has slate-working heritage everywhere you look - keep your eyes open and you'll spot old workings. It's free to access, naturally, since it's open moorland.

Stay at Llwyn yr Helm, which is only 3.7 miles away and has excellent reviews - proper base for tackling multiple peaks without driving for hours. It's close enough that you could do this as a morning walk before exploring the Dolgellau area properly. The town itself is worth a wander, and if you fancy another walk, the Cader Idris route from Minffordd car park is just up the road. Well worth the effort.
