Rhobell Ganol

The walk up Rhobell Ganol isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the view. Starting from near Dolgellau, you're climbing into proper moorland territory - rough grass, heather, and the kind of wind that'll test your jacket. The summit sits at 821 metres and rewards the effort with views across the Cader Idris range and down towards the Mawddach estuary. It's the sort of peak that doesn't demand a full day commitment, more of a solid two to three hours round trip depending on your pace and where you park.

This one's made for walkers who want substance without committing to something like Snowdon. The terrain is boggy in places - proper bog, not just wet grass - so decent boots matter. Kids will manage fine if they're used to hillwalking, though younger ones might find the gradient tedious. It's not a casual family amble.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit, so bring water and maybe a snack. The mountain keeps its weather to itself, so check conditions before heading out. If you're staying at Llwyn yr Helm or Torrent Walk, both within striking distance, Rhobell makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing that won't derail a broader holiday. It's less crowded than the bigger peaks round here, which is worth something when you're seeking a bit of solitude in the Welsh hills.
