Waun Camddwr

The walk up Waun Camddwr isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you work for it. This 545-metre peak sits above Dolgellau in the Cader Idris range, and on a clear day the views south towards Cardigan Bay are genuinely worth the effort.

You're looking at a solid hour's walk from the car park, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photos or stopping to catch your breath. The path itself is well-trodden but can be boggy in places, so proper boots aren't optional. The reward is a proper fell-top experience without needing to commit to the bigger hills nearby - this works brilliantly if you've got a mixed group and someone's fitness is a question mark.

Hill walkers will find it satisfying rather than demanding. Kids will either love it or find it a slog depending on age and enthusiasm; under-eights might struggle, but ten-plus tend to manage fine. The summit gives you that genuine sense of achievement, which matters on a holiday.

It's free to walk, obviously. Go early if you're visiting during peak season - the car park fills up. Autumn and spring are cleanest for views, though winter brings its own drama if conditions are decent.

Stay at Llwyn yr Helm Caravan and Camping Park just 4.4 miles away, and you've got the Cader Idris range as your playground. This peak makes a perfect warmup walk before tackling the bigger summits, or a standalone afternoon if you're not feeling ambitious.
