Waddon Hill

Standing at 252 metres above sea level, this Iron Age hill fort commands proper views across the Bride Valley towards the Dorset coast. The walk up from Beaminster or Broadwindsor isn't too taxing - about 45 minutes of gentle climbing through farmland and woodland paths that can get muddy after rain.

Families with older children will manage the ascent easily enough, though toddlers might find it a bit much. The real draw here is the sense of ancient history beneath your feet. Those grassy ramparts you're walking on are over 2,000 years old, and on a clear day you can see why our ancestors chose this spot - the views stretch from Lyme Bay to the Mendip Hills.

Dog walkers love it up here, and it's free to explore whenever you fancy. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're stopping to appreciate the scenery and maybe have a picnic at the top. Best avoided in thick fog when you can't see your hand in front of your face, let alone the surrounding countryside.

From the holiday parks around Bridport, it's an easy drive to the various footpath starting points. Freshwater Beach Holiday Park and Highlands End Holiday Park are both well-positioned for combining a coastal break with some proper hill walking inland.
