Mangerton Mill

A working watermill from the 13th century still grinding flour today, Mangerton Mill sits in a proper slice of unspoilt Dorset countryside just outside Bridport. The massive wheel turns as it has for centuries, powered by the River Brit, and you can watch the miller at work producing stone-ground flour that's sold in the on-site shop.

Families love this place - kids are fascinated watching the ancient machinery in action, while the tearoom serves excellent cream teas and light lunches. The mill's been lovingly restored and the guides know their stuff, explaining how the whole contraption works without being overly technical about it.

It's not a full day out by any stretch - an hour or so covers it unless you're lingering over tea and cake. The surrounding walks along the river are lovely though, extending your visit if the weather's playing ball. Best combined with a trip to nearby Bridport's bustling market or the coast at West Bay.
