Knight's Hill

Standing 191 metres above the Dorset coast, this modest hill delivers views that punch well above its weight. The climb from Bridport takes about 45 minutes through rolling farmland, and you'll know you've made it when the English Channel spreads out like a crumpled blue sheet below.

Families with older children will find the ascent manageable, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections near the top. The reward is a proper 360-degree panorama taking in Lyme Bay, the Golden Cap cliffs, and on clear days you can spot Portland Bill lighthouse winking in the distance.

Walkers often combine Knight's Hill with the longer South West Coast Path, making it part of a day-long ramble. But honestly, an hour up and down is plenty for most visitors - there's no cafe or facilities at the summit, just grass, sheep, and that view.

The hill works brilliantly as a morning stretch-the-legs excursion if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Highlands End or West Bay. Early risers get the best light for photos, plus you'll have beaten the day-trippers from Bridport who tend to arrive after 10am. Pack a flask - the wind up here can be bitter even on warm days.
