Round Knoll

Standing at 216 metres above sea level, this modest peak on Dorset's Jurassic Coast delivers surprisingly big views for relatively little effort. The walk from Bridport takes about 45 minutes through rolling farmland, gaining height gradually until you reach the grassy summit topped with a small copse. Worth noting that it's not waymarked, so decent navigation skills help.

Once at the top, the panorama stretches from Lyme Bay across to Portland Bill on clear days. The view west towards Golden Cap is particularly fine, though you'll need to walk around the trees to get the full 360-degree picture. Families with older children will manage the ascent easily enough, but toddlers might struggle with the rough ground in places.

What makes Round Knoll special isn't drama - Golden Cap has that covered - but the sense of space and the way it reveals the full sweep of this spectacular coastline. Early morning visits work best, before the heat builds and while the light picks out every detail of the cliffs.

Allow two hours return from Bridport, longer if you fancy extending the walk along the ridge. Pack water and check the weather - the exposed summit can be surprisingly blustery.
