Upper Black Moss Reservoir

Upper Black Moss Reservoir sits on the moorland between Nelson and the higher reaches of Pendle, a working water body that's far less touristy than you'd expect given how close it is to town. The walk around it takes the best part of an hour, depending on pace, and you get proper Pennine views - moorland stretching away, the occasional farmer's gate, honest countryside without the gift shop veneer.

The water itself is calm, the surrounding ground is boggy in places (sensible footwear essential), and there's real peace here. On a clear day you can see across to Pendle Hill itself, which dominates the landscape round these parts.

This works best for people who want a genuine walk rather than a scenic stroll, and for anyone staying at the nearby holiday parks - Higher Grange Glamping is barely a mile away, while Pendle View and Shay Gate Farm are both within striking distance. It's free to access and there are no gates or barriers, just open moorland. Allow a good hour and a half if you're doing the full circuit, maybe two hours if you're slow or want to sit with a flask. Avoid after heavy rain when the paths get properly boggy. Spring and early summer are best - the moorland's less bleak, and the light's better for photographs. Not dramatic enough for everyone, but for walkers who appreciate solitude over spectacle, it's worth the trip.
