Pendle Sculpture Trail - Start/Finish

The Pendle Sculpture Trail starts near Nelson and takes you on a proper walk through the landscape where 17th-century witch trials happened - except this time you're following art installations instead of ghosts. The trail itself is the attraction: a series of sculptures dotted across the moorland and valleys around Pendle Hill, each one responding to the landscape in different ways. Some are obvious, others you'll walk past and think "was that meant to be there?" in the best possible way.

This works brilliantly if you're the type who likes walking but gets bored by just walking - the sculptures break up the miles and give you reasons to stop and actually look at where you are. You'll need a good couple of hours minimum, longer if you're doing the full route, and the moorland can be boggy so proper boots matter. It's free to do, which helps when the weather turns halfway through.

Stay at Higher Grange Glamping just down the road - less than a mile away - and you can knock this out before breakfast or make an afternoon of it. If you've got kids old enough to walk without complaining every ten minutes, they might actually engage with it rather than just suffer through a "cultural experience". Families with younger children might find themselves carrying them up the steeper bits. The nearest town, Nelson, has cafes if you need fuel afterwards.
