Turn Head

The walk up Turn Head rewards you with proper views across the Pennines - Nelson sits just below, and on a clear day you can see right across Lancashire's moorland. It's a modest peak rather than a dramatic summit, but that's rather the point. The climb takes about an hour from the nearest carpark, and the path winds through bracken and rough grassland that gets genuinely windswept near the top.

This is walker territory, plain and simple. Families with young kids might find the final scramble a bit much, though determined five-year-olds have managed it. The real appeal here is the walk itself rather than facilities at the summit - there's nothing there, just space and air and the kind of silence you don't get in towns.

You'll want to time it for decent weather. Wet moorland is miserable moorland, and visibility counts for everything up here. The approach from Nelson takes you through proper Pennine country - it's not manicured, not Instagram-friendly, just honest fell land.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Pendle View is closest at just over 3 miles - this works as a morning or afternoon outing without being a full day commitment. Clitheroe Camping offers a bit more infrastructure if you need hot showers afterwards. Turn Head doesn't compete with bigger hills, but it's the kind of walk locals do on a Tuesday and don't bang on about. Worth your time if you're in the area.
