Pendle Hill Steep Walking Route

The walk up Pendle Hill is steep, proper steep - 557 metres of Lancashire moorland that'll have your legs burning well before the top. Starting from near Nelson, you're looking at a serious climb rather than a gentle stroll, but the views across the Ribble Valley and towards the Forest of Bowland make it worthwhile once you get up there.

What makes this worth the graft is the history wrapped into the walk itself. Pendle's famous for the witch trials of 1612, and standing on the summit where those events still cast a shadow feels genuinely atmospheric. The landscape itself is moorland and grassland - nothing fancy in terms of vegetation, but that's partly what makes it feel exposed and honest. You're walking on paths that thousands have walked before you, and for a fairly short route, the sense of occasion is real.

This is a walker's walk, not a casual family amble. You'll need decent boots and probably two to three hours depending on your fitness. It's free to access - just turn up and get on with it. The moorland can be boggy after rain, so timing matters. Late spring through early autumn is best, when the weather's more cooperative.
