Tyrrau Mawr

The walk up Tyrrau Mawr isn't long, but it punches above its weight. This peak sits just outside Dolgellau in Gwynedd, and on a clear day the views across the Mawddach estuary will stop you in your tracks. The ascent is steep enough to feel like proper exercise without requiring technical kit - good boots and decent weather are all you need.

It's the kind of hill that works brilliantly for families who've outgrown the easy riverside strolls but aren't ready for the serious mountains. Most people take between one and two hours for the round trip, depending on pace and how long you linger at the top. The path itself is well-trodden and reasonably clear, though it gets muddy after rain so come prepared. Don't expect solitude on weekends, especially summer ones.

The real draw is the vantage point. From the summit you're looking down into the estuary with the Cader Idris range beyond - genuinely cracking views that justify the effort. It's free, naturally. If you're based at Graig Wen Camping & Cottages just nearby, you could knock this out in a morning and still have time for lunch in Dolgellau. Even the slightly further Hendre Mynach makes it an easy day out. Worth doing as part of a wider exploration of the area rather than an isolated trip, but if you're in the neighbourhood, skip it at your peril.
