Trum Nant-Fach

The walk up Trum Nant-Fach is short, steep, and properly rewarding. Rising above Bala in Gwynedd, this isn't one of North Wales' household names - you won't find crowds here, which is exactly the point.

From the base it's a straightforward climb of maybe forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace. The path gets your heart going early on, cutting through moorland with views opening out across the Bala Lake valley. On a clear day you can see right across to the Cader Idris massif. The summit itself is windswept and bare, all gritstone and grass, but the perspective you get over the surrounding peaks makes the scramble worthwhile.

This is a walker's hill rather than a tourist attraction. You won't find facilities or interpretation boards - it's just you, the landscape, and a fair bit of weather exposure. Families with kids aged ten and up will manage it fine, though littler ones might struggle with the gradient. Allow a couple of hours return from the trailhead.

It works brilliantly as part of a wider Bala exploration. The nearby Tyn Cornel Camping and Porth Eryri Glamping are both well-positioned for tackling local peaks, and this one's close enough that you can knock it out as a morning activity without eating into your whole day. Visit early in the day if possible - the afternoon mist rolls in quickly here, and you'll lose those views fast. Avoid winter unless you're properly equipped.
