Trevenning Cross

You'll find this granite cross standing alone on the moorland near Bodmin, and it stops you dead. Trevenning Cross is a medieval wayside marker - the sort of thing most people drive past without noticing, but once you know it's there, it becomes oddly compelling. It's basically a tall stone cross, weathered and sturdy, that's been marking the landscape for centuries. The kind of thing that makes you wonder how many travellers have passed this exact spot in the rain.

It's not a museum in the traditional sense - there's no building, no admission fee, no gift shop. What you get is the cross itself, standing on the moor, and the walk to reach it. That's the whole point, really. History buffs and anyone interested in medieval Cornwall will find it worthwhile, though you need to be the sort who appreciates standing in front of an old stone and imagining the centuries. Kids might find the walk tedious unless they're already into that sort of thing.

Allow twenty minutes or so, depending on how long you linger. Go when the weather's decent - the moorland can be bleak and muddy in winter, which adds atmosphere but not comfort. It fits well with a broader Bodmin Moor exploration, and both Camp De Lank and Rosebud Farm sit close enough that you could make it a morning wander from either. The real value here is the walk itself and that sense of touching something genuinely old in an empty landscape.
