Settlement

The Settlement near Bodmin is one of those archaeological sites that rewards a bit of effort to find - it's not signposted like a theme park, and there's no visitor centre or gift shop. What you're looking at are the remains of an Iron Age settlement, basically a series of circular dwelling platforms and field boundaries that tell you how people actually lived here two thousand years ago. The landscape tells the story better than any plaque could.

Walking the site, you start to see the pattern - shallow depressions where roundhouses once stood, the banks that divided fields, the way the whole settlement fits into the moorland terrain. It's atmospheric in a way that's hard to describe until you're standing there. On a grey Cornish afternoon, it genuinely feels like you've stumbled onto something. History types and serious walkers will find this far more engaging than a reconstructed village; you're doing the interpreting yourself, which makes it stick.

Bodmin's your nearest town, about four miles south, and if you're staying at one of the local holiday parks - Camp De Lank or Trewithen Farm are reasonably close - this works as a solid half-day excursion. Bring the Ordnance Survey map because the site isn't heavily promoted, and wear decent boots; moorland gets boggy. There's no charge that we can find, and it's essentially open whenever you can get there. Expect to spend an hour walking around properly, maybe longer if you're the type who sits and thinks about archaeology.
