Lake Highertown

The water at Lake Highertown sits surprisingly still, ringed by moorland that rolls away toward Bodmin in the distance. It's a working reservoir, not some manicured tourist attraction, which is precisely why it's worth the drive from wherever you're staying around here.

You'll find proper walking territory - the sort of place where you can actually stretch your legs without hitting a gift shop. Birdwatchers absolutely love it; the reserve draws everything from common grebes to the occasional rarer species depending on season. The paths are straightforward enough for families, though younger kids might lose interest if they're not into spotting wildlife. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're serious about it, longer if you've brought binoculars and a guidebook.

There's something genuinely peaceful about it. No admission charge, no queues, no faffing about - just you, the water, and whatever birds are about. The moorland backdrop gives it proper character, especially on those brooding Cornish days when the light's doing something interesting.

Stay at Rosebud Farm or Camp De Lank (both four miles away and both excellent), and you've got yourself a solid morning out before heading elsewhere. Trewithen Farm Glamping is slightly further but opens up more options across Bodmin Moor. Lake Highertown won't blow your mind - it's not Windermere or anything - but it's exactly the sort of place that reminds you why a proper walk matters. Worth the detour if you're in the area.
