Logan Rock

The walk up to Logan Rock rewards you with something genuinely unusual - a 80-ton slab of granite that actually rocks. Yes, actually rocks. It's perched on the moorland near Bodmin with just enough of a fulcrum underneath to wobble if you push it hard enough, which feels a bit daft until you're standing there and it genuinely shifts beneath your hands.

It's a proper walk to get here, mind. From the nearest parking you're looking at a good hour across open moorland, so bring decent boots and check the weather - this is exposed country and it can turn nasty quickly. The path isn't signposted brilliantly either, so a map or GPS app is essential rather than optional.

The rock itself has been a visitor attraction since at least the 1700s. Some local lads allegedly stole it for a prank back then - they managed to lock it so it wouldn't move - and the whole thing caused quite the fuss. These days it moves freely again, and tourists and locals regularly gather to heave it back and forth like oversized children.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a quick tick-box stop, and the moorland views outward are the real draw once you're up there. If you're camping at Camp De Lank or any of the other sites around Bodmin, this makes for a cracking half-day expedition. Allow three hours minimum including time messing about at the rock itself. It's free, naturally, being a lump of granite on open land.
