Tree Cathedral

An avenue of beech trees forming a natural cathedral-like structure sounds like the sort of thing the Chilterns does rather well, and this one near Dunstable doesn't disappoint. The trees have grown together over decades to create a tunnel effect - tall, arching branches that genuinely do feel cathedral-like when you walk through, especially on an overcast day when the light filters through all moody and grey.

It's free to visit and takes maybe twenty minutes to walk through properly, though you could spend longer just sitting about if you've brought a picnic. The ground can be boggy depending on the season, so decent boots matter. This works best for walkers and photographers rather than young kids, who might find it a bit underwhelming after five minutes of "it's just trees, innit."

The real win is how close it is to the camping around Whipsnade Zoo - Merlin Farm is literally a mile away. You could easily string this together with a morning at the zoo and still have time to wander through the Tree Cathedral before lunch. If you're based at Woodlands Caravan Site or one of the farmland spots dotted around the Chilterns, it's a proper quick detour.

Best visited in late spring or early autumn when the canopy is thick but there's still light. Go midweek if possible to avoid any other visitors sharing your moment. It won't blow your mind, but it's genuinely atmospheric and costs nothing.
