Top Rays Hill

The walk up Top Rays Hill takes you through proper Yorkshire limestone country, with the Settle area spread out below and the Pennines rolling away in every direction. It's not a dramatic scramble - more a steady climb through moorland and fields - but the views from the top justify the effort entirely. On a clear day you can pick out Pen-y-ghent and Whernside, those more famous peaks that dominate the local skyline.

This is ideal terrain for walkers who want something achievable without needing fell-running fitness. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger children might find the climb tedious without proper breaks. History buffs will appreciate the landscape itself - you're walking through country shaped by centuries of farming and quarrying, though there's nothing specific to see at the summit itself. It fits neatly into a park holiday in the area - Ribblesdale Pods is barely two miles away, making it an easy morning walk before breakfast. The nearby campsites at Philpin Farm and Dalesbridge work equally well as bases. You could easily combine it with the Settle-Carlisle Railway for a proper day out, or pair it with walks around the limestone pavements that make this corner of the Dales special.
