Tomen Y Bala Castle

Scrambling up a grassy mound near Bala, you're standing on what remains of a proper Iron Age hill fort - though 'castle' in the name is doing the spot a bit of a favour, truth be told. Tomen Y Bala isn't some photogenic ruin with turrets; it's an earthwork, a raised plateau ringed by ditches and ramparts that someone thought worth defending around 2,000 years ago. The views across the Bala valley are genuinely good, mind you, and the walk up takes maybe five minutes if you're not waddling.

This appeals mostly to archaeology buffs and local history walkers rather than families expecting something dramatic. Kids will sprint up once and want to leave. Historians, though, will spend time reading the landscape - seeing how the position commands the valley, spotting the defensive ditches, working out where gates might have been. It's the kind of place where you need a decent imagination to get your money's worth, except there's no money - access appears to be free and open at all times.

Near Bala, it fits well into a broader walking day around the area. Tyn Cornel Camping sits just three miles off, so if you're based there, this is a solid twenty-minute detour from the lakeside. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested in the archaeology; twenty minutes if you just want a hilltop walk and views. Go in dry weather - it can get muddy and the banks are steeper than they first appear. Best visited outside school holidays when the car park near the village isn't chaos.
