About Tom Heights
From the summit, you get cracking panoramas across Windermere and the central fells. On clear days, the view stretches right across to the Pennines - though like most Lakeland peaks, it's properly grim in mist and rain. The path can be muddy after wet weather, so decent boots are essential.
Families with older children (say 10 plus) will manage this well, but it's not one for pushchairs or toddlers. The descent back into Ambleside makes for a pleasant afternoon walk, and you're well placed for a proper pub meal afterwards. Dog walkers love this route too, though keep them on leads near the sheep.
If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Windermere like Lakeside Retreat Glamping or the Parkdean sites, Tom Heights makes an excellent day out that won't eat up your entire holiday. Allow four hours round trip including a decent break at the top.
