Rydal Cave

Slate quarrying created this atmospheric cave system back in the day, and now it's one of the Lake District's more unusual spots. The artificial caverns stretch deep into the hillside above Rydal Water, with dramatic arched openings that frame views across the valley below. Getting there involves a proper walk - about twenty minutes uphill from Rydal village - but the path is well-marked and manageable for most families.

Inside feels almost cathedral-like. The quarried chambers echo with every footstep, and shafts of light pierce through from various openings. Kids love the adventure of exploring the different levels and tunnels, though parents should keep a close eye as there are some drops. Take a torch - your phone light won't cut it in the deeper sections.

Walkers combining this with the Rydal Round or heading to Grasmere will find it slots in perfectly. The cave sits roughly halfway between Ambleside and Grasmere, making it an excellent excuse for a breather with a difference. Allow an hour including the walk up, longer if you want to explore thoroughly or enjoy the views from the entrance.
