About High Crag
What makes High Crag special is the view south towards Great Langdale and north to the Solway Firth on clear days. The panorama takes in Pillar, Great Gable and the Scafells - a proper Lake District vista that justifies every steep step. Most walkers combine it with neighbouring High Stile and Red Pike for a cracking ridge walk.
Experienced fell walkers will get the most from this one. The terrain can be tricky in poor weather, and it's not really suitable for young children or casual ramblers. Allow four to five hours for the full circuit from Buttermere, though you could easily spend longer soaking up those views.
From holiday parks around Ambleside like Lakeside Retreat Glamping, it's about a 45-minute drive to reach Buttermere village, making it a proper day out rather than a quick morning jaunt. The approach road through Honister Pass is worth the journey itself - just don't attempt it in a large motorhome.
