Loughrigg Fell

Standing 335 metres above the valleys, this is the fell that proves big views don't always need big climbs. Loughrigg Fell offers one of the finest panoramas in the Lake District for surprisingly little effort - though don't let that fool you into thinking it's a doddle. The path from Ambleside winds steadily upward through bracken and heather, with the summit revealing spectacular views across Windermere, Grasmere, and the Langdale Pikes.

Families with older children will find this a proper introduction to fell walking without the commitment of a full day out. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on how long you linger at the top taking photos. The views really are exceptional - on a clear day you can pick out most of the major peaks that make the Lake District famous.

What makes Loughrigg special is its position. Sitting between the major valleys, it acts like a natural viewing platform over the heart of Lakeland. The final approach to the summit involves a bit of scrambling over rocky outcrops, which adds to the adventure without being genuinely challenging for anyone reasonably fit.
