Tinners' Hut

The Tinners' Hut sits on Dartmoor's high ground, a genuine Bronze Age roundhouse that's been excavated and reconstructed to show how people actually lived here over three thousand years ago. It's not glamorous - just a circular stone base with a thatched roof - but standing inside it forces you to reckon with the fact that someone built this, lived through winters in it, raised children in it. The site sits near Tavistock, which makes it an easy stop if you're already exploring the moor.

This is pure archaeology, nothing dressed up for visitors. There's no cafe, no gift shop, no audio guide telling you what to think. You turn up, you look at it, you either get it or you don't. For history types and anyone interested in how Bronze Age people actually survived on Dartmoor, it's genuinely compelling - no romanticising, just evidence. Kids might find it underwhelming if they're expecting something more interactive, though the walk out to it across the moor can be decent enough if the weather holds.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as part of a broader Dartmoor circuit - combine it with the nearby holiday parks at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park or Langstone Manor if you're basing yourself locally. Go midweek if possible; the moor gets proper busy at weekends.
