Longtimber Tor

The walk up Longtimber Tor takes you through proper moorland, the kind of Devon landscape that feels timeless and a bit wild. It's not particularly high - nothing dramatic in terms of altitude - but the views across Dartmoor once you're up there justify the effort. You're looking out across rolling hills and heather, and on a clear day the perspective shifts how the whole moor feels around you.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with young kids might find the climb a bit much, though teenagers who can handle a steady uphill trek will get something real from it - no plastic steps or interpretation boards, just honest moorland. History buffs will appreciate that you're walking on ancient ground; Dartmoor has Bronze Age settlements scattered across it, though Longtimber itself is less famous than some peaks. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace and how long you want to sit about at the top with a flask.

The nearest proper base is Tavistock, a solid market town about 20 minutes' drive away. If you're holidaying at Langstone Manor, Lydford, or Woodovis - all good parks within striking distance - you could easily slot this into a morning or afternoon alongside other moorland walks. Go when the weather's decent; moorland fog kills the views stone dead, and the wind up there can be properly fierce. Admission's free, as these things usually are on Dartmoor.
