Conies Down Tor

The walk up Conies Down Tor rewards you with proper views across Dartmoor - nothing fancy, just honest moorland stretching to the horizon. It's a straightforward climb from Tavistock side, steep enough to feel earned but short enough that you won't be cursing by the top. The tor itself is modest compared to some of Dartmoor's showier peaks, but that's partly why it's good. You get the drama without the crowds.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Langstone Manor or Lydford Caravan & Camping are close enough for a morning or afternoon jaunt. The walk takes about an hour round trip depending on pace and how long you linger. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the final push tedious. Walkers will appreciate the moorland feel and the fact that you can extend it into longer routes across the moor if you fancy it.

Go early in the day if you can. The light's better and the moor feels wilder when it's quiet. Weather on Dartmoor changes fast, so check the forecast before you head out - fog rolls in quickly and visibility drops. Bring waterproofs as a matter of course. The tor itself costs nothing; it's just there, free to climb. Tavistock's only a few miles away if you need supplies or want to grab something after.
