Great Mis Tor

The walk up Great Mis Tor rewards you with one of Dartmoor's best vistas - all moorland rolling away to the horizon, with Tavistock nestled in the valley below if you squint hard enough. It's a proper moorland peak, not some manicured hilltop, which means the ground underfoot can be boggy and the wind cuts through without warning even on seemingly mild days.

The climb itself takes about forty minutes from the car park, depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath. The path is well-trodden but uneven - good boots matter here. Once you're up, the Tor itself is a jumble of granite boulders that kids will want to scramble over, and adults will want to sit on while eating a sandwich and pretending they're not knackered.

This is walker territory. Serious walkers, day-trippers from Tavistock, families who don't mind a bit of rough ground. If you're after a gentle stroll with cafe stops, look elsewhere. But if you want genuine moorland air and a real sense of having got somewhere, it's worth the effort.

Free to visit, naturally - it's Dartmoor. Allow two to three hours for the round trip if you're taking your time. The weather here changes faster than you'd believe, so check conditions before you head out.
