Tinners Hut

Out on Dartmoor proper, a few miles from Tavistock, sits a low stone structure that takes you straight back to the tin mining days that shaped this landscape. Tinners Hut is exactly what it sounds like - the remains of a shelter where miners would have sheltered during their shifts extracting tin from the moorland. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no interpretation boards. You just get the stones, the moor, and your own imagination filling in the blanks.

It's the sort of place that appeals most to people with an actual interest in mining history or moorland archaeology. Casual walkers might find it a bit underwhelming - it's not dramatic, and unless you know what you're looking at, it's easy to walk past. But if you're the type who enjoys piecing together how people lived and worked in harsh conditions, this is genuinely compelling. The site sits within the wider Dartmoor landscape, which tells the story of centuries of industrial activity across what looks now like wild, empty terrain.

Allowing twenty minutes to half an hour is realistic. There's no entrance fee or admission to worry about - it's open land. The nearest towns for supplies are Tavistock or further afield. If you're based at Langstone Manor or Lydford Caravan Park, both within easy reach, it makes a worthwhile morning detour combined with a proper walk across the moor. Don't expect comfort or facilities. Expect to get muddy.
