Tilburstow Hill

The walk up Tilburstow Hill takes you through proper Surrey countryside, starting from the village of Lingfield and climbing gradually through woodland that's absolutely brilliant in autumn. It's not exactly a dramatic ascent - you won't find any scrambling or exposed ridges - but the views across the Weald from the top make the steady trudge worthwhile. On a clear day you can see for miles, which is no small feat given how built-up this part of the south-east has become.

This isn't a peak for adrenaline junkies. It's the sort of walk families with older kids will enjoy without complaint, or a good leg-stretcher for walkers based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Alderstead Heath Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is only a few miles away if you're staying in a campervan. The whole outing takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace, including a sit-down at the top. Allow longer if you stop to photograph the views or poke about in the village itself.

The real value here is as part of a bigger day out rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with a walk around Lingfield Priory or a wander through the village and you've got a solid half-day sorted. The tree-lined paths offer decent shelter in dodgy weather, though it can get muddy after rain. Go on a weekday morning if you can - the car parks fill up quickly on weekends.
