Mill Wood

Dense canopy overhead filters the sunlight into dancing patches across the woodland floor at Mill Wood, a proper stretch of Sussex forest just outside Lingfield. The paths wind through ancient oak and beech stands, with enough variety to keep experienced walkers interested without being too challenging for families with young children.

Walking boots recommended - the tracks can get muddy after rain, particularly in the lower sections where small streams thread between the trees. Wildlife spotters will have a field day here, with regular sightings of deer, red kites circling overhead, and if you're quiet enough, the occasional badger track in softer ground.

Families staying at nearby Golden Cross Holiday Park or Warren Wood Country Park will find this makes for a lovely morning or afternoon expedition. Allow two to three hours if you want to explore properly, though you could easily spend longer with a picnic. The forest connects to several footpath networks, so serious walkers can extend their route considerably.

Best visited on crisp autumn days when the leaf colour is spectacular, though it's equally atmospheric in spring when bluebells carpet sections of the woodland floor. Dogs welcome but keep them on leads during nesting season. Not much in the way of facilities, so come prepared with water and snacks.
