Furnace Wood

The woodland around Furnace Wood, just outside Lingfield, is proper Sussex - all dense canopy and damp leaf mulch underfoot. You're walking through mixed broadleaf forest here, the sort of place where the light comes through in fractured beams and everything smells of earth and time. It's not a destination with visitor facilities or marked trails in the conventional sense; this is more about wandering through genuine working woodland and letting your eyes adjust to the green-filtered quiet.

Walkers will find plenty to explore, though you'll need to be comfortable with unmade paths and the occasional muddy stretch. Since there's no official information on admission or facilities, treat it as open access woodland. Go early morning or late afternoon for better light and fewer people. An hour or two is enough to get the feel of it without overcommitting.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Dernwood Farm or Horam Manor are closest - this is a solid half-day walk from your pitch. It slots well into a broader East Sussex forest crawl, mixing with longer routes through the High Weald. Don't go expecting signage or toilet blocks. Go because you want to spend time under old trees and not see another soul.
