Thornton Force Waterfall

The walk to Thornton Force takes you through proper fell countryside just outside Carnforth, climbing steadily until the waterfall announces itself with sound before you see it. Water drops about 14 metres over limestone shelves, creating that sudden roar that makes you quicken your pace the final few hundred metres. It's not vast by Alpine standards, but it punches above its weight in a quiet corner of North Yorkshire.

You'll earn this view. The route from Carnforth climbs roughly 200 metres over a couple of miles, so it's best suited to reasonably fit walkers and families with school-age kids rather than toddlers in buggies. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, longer if you're photographer types keen to capture the cascade from every angle. The limestone landscape has that austere beauty - moorland grass, rocky outcrops, no frills.

The falls work best after rain when the volume's impressive. Visit midweek if you can, as weekends draw fell walkers from all over. Spring through autumn makes sense; winter scrambles aren't worth the risk on these exposed paths.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Primrose Glamping Pods is closest at 1.6 miles, or Philpin Farm Campsite a shade further - this makes a solid half-day excursion. Pair it with other Lake District walks; you're practically on the doorstep. Carnforth itself is functional rather than charming, but the surrounding countryside more than compensates.
