Ingleton Waterfalls Trail

The walk from Ingleton village takes you through proper fell country, following two rivers that converge into a spectacular finale of cascading water. This is the Waterfalls Trail - a four-and-a-half-mile loop that climbs steeply in places but rewards you with five distinct drops to photograph and gawk at. The first section follows Swilla Glen Beck; you'll cross footbridges and scramble over rocks while the water tumbles beside you. After about ninety minutes you reach Pecca Bridge, then the trail switches to Twisleton Glen, where the landscape opens out and the falls come thick and fast.

It's not a casual stroll. The terrain's rough in spots and the climbs are genuine - expect wet boots and heavy calves. But that's exactly why most casual tourists miss it, which means you get the place mostly to yourself on a weekday. Families with confident walkers aged ten upwards will manage fine; younger kids might find the scrambling tedious.

The whole loop takes between two and three hours depending on how often you stop to catch your breath. Go in autumn after rain when the falls are thundering, or spring when the light's sharp and clean. Summer crowds the path and low water makes the falls less dramatic.

Carnforth's about fifteen minutes away by car if you're staying at one of the nearby farms - Philpin and Orcaber are both solid options for a base. Do this walk on your first full day; it'll set the tone for exploring the rest of the Yorkshire Dales.
