White Scar Cave

The walk to White Scar Cave takes you through moorland above Carnforth, climbing steadily until you spot the cave entrance tucked into the hillside. It's a proper underground system - you descend into passages where a stream flows year-round, and the cave opens out into chambers with formations that have taken millennia to develop. The air changes temperature noticeably as you go deeper, and there's something genuinely awe-inspiring about walking through spaces carved by water alone.

This is one for anyone who likes geology or simply wants to go underground without the tourist crowds. Families with kids aged eight or above will find it engaging rather than exhausting. The walk itself isn't brutal but does involve some scrambling and uneven ground, so proper boots matter. Allow two to three hours total if you're doing the full walk from Carnforth and exploring properly inside.

Word of warning - phone signal is patchy once you're up on the moors, so plan your route before you leave. The cave itself is free to explore, though if there's a ranger on site they may ask for a small donation to help with maintenance. Summer weekends pull crowds, so off-season visits feel calmer.

Staying at one of the nearby campsites - Philpin Farm or Primrose Glamping Pods are closest - gives you a proper base to explore the wider area. This sits well alongside walks across the surrounding hills and quieter spots you won't find if you're just visiting for the cave.
