Baxenghyll Gorge

The gorge cuts through the landscape like someone's taken a knife to the hillside - sheer rock walls rising up on both sides, with the stream running fast below. It's genuinely dramatic, the kind of place that makes you stop mid-walk and just look up for a bit.

You get here via a proper footpath from near Carnforth, and the walk itself is the whole point. The gorge unfolds as you approach rather than hitting you all at once, which is better than most viewpoints that rely on a single postcard view. The water's usually moving quite quickly, especially after rain, and that's when it's most impressive. Summer can feel a bit tame by comparison.

This works brilliantly if you're camping at one of the nearby spots - Philpin Farm or Primrose Glamping Pods are close enough for a morning walk without making a full day of it. It's the kind of detour that justifies the drive to Yorkshire rather than something you'd plan a whole trip around. Allow an hour or so for the walk and looking about; longer if you're the type who sits by streams and thinks.

Kids who've got decent leg strength and aren't fussed about attractions with cafes will enjoy it. The gorge itself is free and accessible during daylight hours. Go on a day when the water's properly running - that's when Baxenghyll shows what it's got.
