The History Box in Scarborough does exactly what it says on the tin - it's a museum dedicated to the town's past, and it's the kind of place that works brilliantly if you've got a genuine interest in how seaside resorts actually developed. You'll find exhibits covering everything from Victorian tourism through to more recent decades, with actual artefacts and photographs that tell the story of how Scarborough became what it is today.

It's particularly good for history enthusiasts and anyone who wants to understand the bones of the place before wandering the seafront. Families with older kids will get something from it, though younger ones might lose interest once they've had a quick look around. The museum feels like a labour of love rather than a slick operation, which is rather refreshing actually.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Parkdean Resorts at Cayton Bay is only about twenty minutes' drive, or the Scarborough Camping and Caravanning Club site is even closer - it makes sense to pop in on a rainy afternoon or as a quieter alternative to the main seafront attractions. Allow an hour or so, maybe ninety minutes if you're reading everything properly.
