About Castle Hill

Standing 570 feet above Scarborough's South Bay, this grassy headland delivers some of the finest coastal views in Yorkshire. The walk up from the town centre takes about 20 minutes through winding paths, and while it's a proper climb, the panorama from the top makes every step worthwhile. On clear days you can see right along the coast to Filey and beyond.

History buffs will appreciate the Bronze Age settlement remains scattered across the summit, though there's not much left to actually see beyond some earthworks. The real draw is simply standing on this windswept plateau, watching seabirds wheel below and ships dotting the horizon.

Families with older children will manage the ascent fine, but it might be too much for little legs - there's no gentle route up. Dog walkers absolutely love it here, and it's free to roam whenever you fancy. Early morning visits reward you with fewer crowds and often spectacular sunrise colours over the North Sea.

From holiday parks around Cayton Bay or central Scarborough, Castle Hill makes an excellent morning expedition before hitting the beach. Parkdean Resorts Cayton Bay Holiday Park sits just 3.5 miles south, making it an easy drive to the base of the hill. Pack a flask - the summit can be blowy even on warm days.
