Olivers Mount

Standing at 500 feet above Scarborough, this modest hill delivers proper coastal views without the crowds that mob the castle below. You'll spot the sweep of South Bay stretching towards Filey, with the North Sea rolling away to the horizon on clear days. The summit takes about 20 minutes to reach from the town centre if you're reasonably fit, though the final stretch gets a bit steep.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from this spot, especially around sunset when the light catches the Victorian seafront buildings. Families with young children might find the climb more of a slog than it's worth - there's no playground at the top, just the view and a few benches.

Motor racing enthusiasts know Olivers Mount better for its hill climb circuit, which hosts events throughout the summer. When there's no racing on, you can walk the course and imagine the bikes screaming up the tarmac.

Access is free and the hill's open all year, though winter winds can be fierce up here. Allow an hour return trip from Scarborough's centre, or drive partway up if your legs aren't up to it. For families staying at Haven Blue Dolphin or the other parks around Cayton Bay, it makes a decent half-day excursion when paired with a wander through Scarborough's old town.
