The Mere

The Mere sits just outside Scarborough as a proper working landscape - part nature reserve, part local secret that most visitors to the coast completely miss. It's a shallow freshwater lake ringed by reeds and woodland, the sort of place where you'll actually see waterfowl going about their business rather than posed for postcards.

This isn't a destination that demands half a day. An hour's walk around the perimeter does it justice, though birdwatchers could easily camp here for longer with binoculars. The paths are straightforward enough for families with kids old enough to manage a couple of miles on foot, but there's not much in the way of playgrounds or facilities - it's genuinely about watching nature rather than being entertained by it. Winter and spring bring the most birdlife; summer can feel a bit quiet once the reeds are fully grown.

Free access and no gates to worry about, which is refreshing. The nearest town of Scarborough offers all the typical seaside services, but The Mere itself is refreshingly undeveloped - no cafes, no gift shops, no tannoy announcements.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Humble Bee Farm Glamping or Haven Primrose Valley, The Mere works as a nice morning outing to stretch your legs away from the crowds. It won't replace a proper nature reserve visit, but as a gentle local walk from your holiday base, it's well worth twenty minutes' drive from Scarborough. Go early if you want decent light for photography or serious birdwatching.
