The Gwyllt

The Gwyllt is a proper wild space - a nature reserve in Gwynedd that feels genuinely untamed compared to the manicured attractions you'll find elsewhere along the North Wales coast. It's the kind of place where you actually see what the landscape looked like before we started tidying everything up: woodland, grassland, streams, the lot. Wildlife thrives here - birdwatchers will have a field day, and if you're after spotting red squirrels or various native plants, you've come to the right spot.

Walkers get the most from a visit. There are proper trails through the reserve, and you can spend anywhere from an hour to half a day depending on how far you fancy going. The terrain's not brutal, but it's uneven enough to keep you engaged. Families with older kids will enjoy it; younger ones might tire quickly if they're not keen on muddy paths and "nothing to do."

It's free to access, which is brilliant. The reserve doesn't have the visitor centre infrastructure of some bigger attractions - there's no café, no gift shop - so come prepared with water and snacks if you're planning a longer wander. Spring and early summer are magic for wildflowers and birds.

Porthmadog sits just down the road, making The Gwyllt an easy addition to a caravan park stay. Several sites within three miles - Barcdy, Garreg Goch, and the others - give you a good base. It's the kind of place that breaks up a holiday nicely without demanding much planning. Real Wales, not the postcard version.
