The Dancing Tree

A lone tree with a pronounced lean grows right out of the riverbank near Porthmadog, and locals swear it dances in the wind. You'll find it in a small nature reserve that's entirely free to access, tucked away from the main tourist trail - the kind of place where you actually have to know where you're going to find it.

The tree itself is the draw. It's genuinely striking: gnarled, twisted, and permanently bent as though it's mid-curtsy. On a breezy day you can see why people call it the Dancing Tree. The surrounding reserve is modest but proper lovely - riverside walks, native woodland, and the sort of quiet you don't get near the coast in summer. There's no visitor centre or café, no interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. It's just the tree, the river, and Wales.

Walkers will appreciate the simplicity of it. Families with young kids might find an hour's wander enough unless they're the type to spend ages looking for wildlife. It works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're based at one of the caravan parks scattered around Porthmadog - Garreg Goch and Barcdy are closest at just over two miles away. Worth pairing it with a walk along the Glaslyn estuary or a visit to the harbour itself rather than making it a day's destination on its own.

Bring decent boots if it's been wet. The paths can be boggy, and the riverbank's a bit unpredictable underfoot.
