The Allt

The Allt is a proper fell walk rather than a tourist attraction with facilities - it's a peak in the Black Mountains that rewards you with views across Powys and towards Hereford if you're willing to put in the legwork. The ascent isn't technical, but it's steep enough to get your heart going, and the moorland terrain means the path can be boggy after rain. Most people tackle it as part of a longer ridge walk rather than an isolated trip, which makes sense given the effort required.

This is squarely for walkers who know what they're doing. Families with young kids will find it tough going; teenagers and adults with decent fitness will get on fine. The real appeal is the solitude and the views - you're not fighting crowds here. Allow three to four hours for a decent circuit depending on your fitness and how far you want to range across the moorland.

Winter can be grim, so spring through autumn is when you'll actually enjoy the walk rather than battle the elements.
