Glasbury Cutting Nature Reserve

A former railway cutting that's been left to nature - that's what makes this place rather special. The Glasbury Cutting sits just outside Hereford in Powys, where an old Victorian rail line once thundered through. Now it's a proper wild corridor, with limestone cliffs on either side and a stream running through the bottom. Botanists reckon this is one of the best spots in Wales for orchids, particularly the early purple and bee orchids if you time it right in late spring.

The walk through the reserve takes you along the old trackbed itself - roughly level, which means it suits families and anyone who can't manage steep gradients. The whole thing is maybe half an hour of gentle pottering, longer if you stop to look at the flowers or listen for birds. The cliffs either side are dramatic without being threatening, and the whole space feels like nature's quietly reclaimed what was once purely functional.

Birdwatchers get a decent reward here too. Warblers, nuthatches, and spotted woodpeckers turn up depending on season. It's free to visit and run by Brecknock Wildlife Trust, though you'll want to check their website for any specific access details before you go.

If you're based at one of the holiday parks around Hay-on-Wye or further along the Wye Valley, this makes a cracking half-day stop. It's not a full afternoon's entertainment, but paired with a wander round Hay itself or exploring other walks along the river, it's worth the detour. Go in May for the orchids - you'll understand why they've protected it.
