Llanthomas Castle Mound

The grassy mound rising from the fields near Hereford is all that remains of Llanthomas Castle - a Norman fortification that once commanded this corner of the Welsh borderlands. It's not dramatic ruins or imposing stonework; instead you get a gentle earthwork that rewards a bit of imagination and a willingness to read the landscape.

What you're looking at is a motte-and-bailey design, the kind of quick-build fortress the Normans threw up across Wales in the 11th century. The main mound itself is the motte - where a wooden keep once stood - with traces of the bailey (the outer defensive area) still visible if you know what to look for. There's something rather meditative about standing on top of it, surveying the same views that medieval soldiers would have watched.
