Tarn Hows Viewpoint

Stand on the wooden platform above this artificial lake and you'll understand why Tarn Hows is one of the Lake District's most photographed spots. The view takes in the entire tarn, framed by fells and woodland that changes dramatically with the seasons - autumn brings proper fireworks of colour.

Created in the 1860s by damming two smaller tarns, this National Trust site draws crowds for good reason. The circular walk around the water takes about an hour on well-maintained paths, making it accessible for families with pushchairs and less confident walkers. From the main viewpoint, the panorama stretches across to Wetherlam and the Langdale Pikes.

Expected the crowds, especially at weekends and during school holidays. Early morning or late afternoon visits reward you with better light and fewer people jostling for the money shot. The car park fills up fast in summer - arrive before 10am or risk a frustrating hunt for spaces.
