Talyllyn Railway - Abergynolwyn Railway Station

The narrow-gauge train pulls up at Abergynolwyn with a satisfying wheeze of steam, and you remember why railways like this still matter. Talyllyn Railway is Britain's oldest independent narrow-gauge line, and this particular station sits at the end of the route - the terminus where the whole affair comes to a stop after winding through Snowdonia foothills. You get out, stretch your legs, and realise you're properly in the mountains now, surrounded by slate hillsides that drop away dramatically. The station itself is modest - a proper working Victorian setup, nothing over-restored - with a small cafe and a few railway buildings that feel genuinely lived-in rather than curated. Most people allow a couple of hours here: ride the train up from Towyn, explore the station, maybe grab tea, then ride back down. It's brilliant for railway enthusiasts, obviously, but families with restless kids aged four to ten tend to find it holds their attention well - there's something magnetic about steam trains that never quite gets old. The walk around Abergynolwyn village itself is pleasant enough if the weather holds, though it's not a major destination in its own right. From Dolgellau, you're looking at about half an hour's drive, which makes it an easy addition to a broader park holiday. Gwerniago Campsite and Graig Wen are both within striking distance, and worth the detour if you're staying put for more than a day or two. Best visited on a clear day when the views aren't swallowed by cloud.
