Sychnant

Standing at 317 metres above sea level, this modest peak north of Porthmadog offers surprisingly good views without the crowds that plague Snowdon. The climb takes about an hour from the nearest parking spot, following a well-defined but sometimes boggy path through typical Welsh moorland.

Walkers with a reasonable level of fitness will find Sychnant a proper little workout - steep enough to get the heart pumping but not so challenging that children will struggle. The summit reveals excellent views across the Glaslyn estuary towards Harlech and the Lleyn Peninsula on clear days.

Families staying at nearby sites like Haven Greenacres or Black Rock Sands will find this makes a cracking morning adventure before hitting the beach. Allow three hours round trip including time to admire the scenery and catch your breath. Early morning visits work best when the light catches the water below and before any afternoon haze rolls in.

While hardly a mountain in the grand Welsh tradition, Sychnant delivers decent bang for your buck if you're after views without the tourist hordes. The path can be muddy after rain, so decent walking boots are essential. Not one for pushchairs or anyone expecting facilities at the top - this is proper hill walking, just on a smaller scale.
