Swellands Reservoir

Water stretches out flat and wide here, hemmed in by moorland that rolls away toward the horizon. Swellands Reservoir sits just outside Greenfield, a proper working bit of Yorkshire landscape rather than a tourist attraction dressed up for the cameras. It's the kind of place locals know well and visitors often stumble upon by accident while exploring the Pennines.

The walk around the perimeter takes a couple of hours if you're not rushing. The path is straightforward enough, though it can get boggy in wet weather so decent boots are wise. On a clear day the light bouncing off the water is lovely, and there's a real sense of being out in open countryside without the crowds you'd find at more famous reservoirs nearby.

It works well for families with older kids or anyone keen on low-key walking rather than dramatic views. You won't find facilities here - no cafe, no visitor centre, no parking attendant. That's part of its charm, though it also means you need to be self-sufficient. Bring a packed lunch if you're making a day of it.

If you're staying at Secret Valley Escapes or Whitegate Leisure just down the road, this makes a solid morning or afternoon outing. It slots in nicely alongside Greenfield's other moorland walks without demanding the full hiking commitment of the higher peaks. Worth doing once, particularly if the weather's cooperative.
