Brown Hill

Brown Hill rises above Greenfield like a proper northern fell, and the walk up rewards you with views that stretch across the Pennines if the weather's on your side. It's not a dramatic peak - no exposed rock or scrambling - just a straightforward moorland climb that takes the best part of an hour from the village and appeals more to walkers than Instagram seekers.

The summit itself is modest: moorland grass, a trig point, and the satisfying knowledge you've climbed something real. On clear days you'll see why people bother. On grey days, which is half the year up here, it's all swirling cloud and the occasional sheep wondering why you're making so much effort.

Families with decent legs will manage it fine - no technical bits, just steady gradient - though small children might grumble the last stretch. It's the sort of walk where you actually feel like you've done something rather than wandered around a beauty spot for ninety minutes.

If you're based at Dovestone Holiday Park just two miles away, Brown Hill makes an obvious morning outing before heading to bigger attractions. The park itself sits nicely for exploring the wider moorland, and combining a gentle peak with the infrastructure of a holiday park makes sense for families. Hedgerow Luxury Glamping and Thornton Hall Country Park are also within reasonable striking distance if you fancy varying your base. The Greenfield area isn't bombarded with tourists, which frankly is the entire point.
